Information > General
The study concluded that the design had many technical and commercially feasible environmental attributes and compared favorably with the European Eco-label specifications for PC’s (which no computer has achieved to date). It suggested a redesign based on extending the operational life of the hardware via an upgradeable chassis with modular interface port design, using raw materials and assembly techniques to increase the recycling and reuse options at end of life and increasing energy efficiency. At present, MicroPro™ is embarking on a further phase of development, of what we are provisionally calling the Zero Waste Personal Computer (iameco™). In this we are supported by the Irish Government’s "Cleaner Greener Production Programme" (CGPP) and the European Commission under their "Life Programme". The Project is pioneering R&D initiative that will contribute to the reduction and elimination of electronic waste in computer equipment and peripherals, and be an example for other electronic products. We have partnered with the University of Limerick, Ireland and the Technical University of Braunschweig, German and KERP in Vienna for R&D This will be achieved through demonstration, via the development and manufacture of a Prototype that will provide a benchmark for such products. Following the successful production and testing of this Prototype, MicroPro intends to put it (or a modified model) into commercial production by end of 2006. iameco™ will be unique in reflecting best practice and state-of-the-art technology with respect to energy efficient and environmentally aware design. The Project will also scrutinize MicroPro’s production process, to ensure that it is energy efficient and minimizes waste.
