Imagine this: you buy a new computer monitor, take your old one and just bury it in the garden. 3 years later the monitor has biodegraded and your prized tomatoes are growing better than ever. The world’s first 100% biodegradable computer components have arrived from MicroPro, a company based in Dublin, Ireland who produces eco-friendly computers, keyboards, mice and flat-panel monitors. The company, established in 1992, has just 17 engineers but has made a big impact with their innovative designs.

For environmentally aware computer users out there an Irish company has brought out a range of wood-housed PCs. The machines, which are assembled in Ireland by Iameco, contain none of the harmful materials such as PVCs and heavy metals used in most PCs. They come in several varieties of wood including Ash, Beech, Maple and Ebony and even have matching wood-finished keyboards, mice and flat-screen monitors that double as high-definition TVs.

Project Heatsun - A Genuinely Sustainable PC

The computer has been developed by MicroPro (Multimedia Computer Systems), an SME based in Rathfarnham, South Dublin, and is the world’s first PC aimed at securing the European Eco-Label. The IAMECO uses only reusable components, can be dismantled in 11 minutes, is energy-efficient, and contains no hazardous materials such as lead or mercury.

Ireland’s only eco-friendly PC launched

Iameco, Ireland’s first line of environmentally-sound, high-performance personal computers, have been officially launched. They are available at Micropro’s retail outlet in Dublin, at Cultivate in Temple Bar and on-line at iameco.com. The new range of PCs, designed and assembled in Ireland, are free of many of the harmful materials, such as brominated flame retardants, PVCs and heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury that have been regularly used in computer manufacture for years.

Report for the Eco-X Conference in Vienna

Project HEATSUN was proposed and has been developed within the context of the WEEE (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment), the RHOS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directives and the Directive establishing a framework for eco-design requirements of energy using products. The first two Directives came into force on 13.02.03, setting collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical products. The latter has just been adopted....
